36. Attributed to Horace Bundy (American, 1814-1883)

"Marriage Portraits", sitters unknown. Husband and wife sit opposite one another with a window and curtain artfully between them, curtains drawn to reveal a distant landscape. Both are well dressed in black silk, she with fancy lace collar. Paintings are typical of Bundy's work, however the gentleman's hand has extensive over painting, giving an awkward appearance. Canvas sizes apprx 29" x 24", overall with frame apprx 34-1/2" x 29-1/2". The verso of stretchers have stapled envelopes, one of which has a c. 1950's black and white photo of the back of one canvas.

Purchased from a antiques store in New Hampshire by a family from Lake Forest, IL. Bundy almost always signed his work, however these have been trimmed and relined, so a signature or inscription has not been found. Detailed biography is on the details page, excerpted from the National Gallery of Art, home to one of Bundy's paintings.
