143. William Sommer (American, 1867-1949)

This ink drawing is entitled "Horse Grazing." Signed W.S. 162 on verso. Image measures apprx 8-1/2" x 10". Pencil sketch on verso of another horse. Matted, this piece measures apprx 16" x 20".

Sommer was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied with a lithographer for seven years. His work is found in many public collections including the National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is a well known Cleveland School artist. Collectors have found Sommer's compositions with horses and with cows to be some of his most appealing.
