68. Henry James Soulen (American 1888-1965)

Oil on board, apprx 15-1/2"H x 28-3/4"W, signed lower right. known for his illustration work, this image depicts workers hoeing an rocky field around a central female figure. A distant town is in the background with a castle on the hill.

Soulen was a student under Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, and Jessie Wilcox Smith. Soulen's illustrated work is distinguished by a rich, textural surface, and a bold use of color, which is a similarity of all the above mention artists. He began his artistic carrer in illustration at The Saturday Evening Post and as his carrer matured his work was often found in such publications as the Ladies' Home Journal and The Country Gentleman. He was also the recipient of the Peabody Award for magazine cover design.
