| 38. Walter Launt Palmer (American, 1854-1932)
"Late Afternoon". Oil on canvas, signed lower right, in original frame. Purchase receipt from Pascal M. Gatterdam Art Gallery, New York accompanies the lot. This painting has been in the same family and is completely fresh to the market. This is among the latest and is perhaps the last painting by the artist, as he died three weeks after the painting's purchase. Canvas apprx 25" x 30", overall with frame apprx 33" x 38". This genre of late afternoon or early morning sunlight on a snow-laden forest landscape with a stream had become the signature composition for Palmer. He acheived a method of using color and texture that depicted the wintry scene with a peaceful glow, now the most popular image among collectors. The original envelope from the gallery includes a cover letter, receipt and black and white photodocument for the painting. The verso of the photograph is inscribed by Palmer, addressed to the purchaser thanking him for purchasing the painting. The last line of the inscription states "I can only hope you may get as much pleasure from owning this picture as I did in painting it!", dated 1932. 20,000/40,000 Sold $66,125.00 back to catalog |
