| 455. Bobo Ule Mask, Early 20th Century
This mask was originally purchased from Sam Hilu Primitive Arts in 1970. This Ule mask takes the form of a circular face painted with geometric designs in black, white and red. Frayed and knotted rope attached to back of the head symbolizes hair. Verso has black and white checkerboard pattern. The mouth and eyes are comprised of concentric rings. Face is surmounted by a large plank accented with zigzag, triangular and linear motifs. The tip of the plank is adorned with a set of horns. Ule masks were often used in burial ceremonies or initiation ceremonies. Measures apprx 59" x 16." 500/1,000 Sold $345.00 back to catalog |
