116. Four Engravings by George Keating (1784-1797), c. 1791


After paintings by George Moreland (1763-1804), a set of four mezzotint plates on chain lined paper with additional coloring. Titles include, "Trepanning a Recruit", "Recruit Deserted", "Recruit Taking Leave of his Wife" and "Deserter Pardon'd". All four read "Painted by G. Morland" and "Engraved by G. Keating" on either side of the title of the plate, which is located in the center lower margin. Under the title reads "London publish'd July 29th 1791 by J.R. Smith King Str Convent Garden". On versos, tags from Vixseboxse Art Galleries of Cleveland, Ohio. They are matted and framed under glass and measure apprx 22-1/4" x 18-1/4" image size, apprx 29-1/2" x 25-1/2" framed.

Signed ink drawing depicts Jesus Christ with his hand outstretched in the sign of peace. A woman kneels next to Him and several other figures stand before Him. He appears to be giving a blessing. Signed in lower right hand corner Claudio Ridolfi. Verso has an ink drawing of a man trying to escape death. Death is portrayed as a skeleton clutching onto the man's cloak. Overall size of paper is apprx 6" x 8". Also included in this lot is a drawing made from red conte crayon. Chain lines and watermark are visible on paper. Collector's stamp located on verso. This is a sketch of the interior of a baroque church. Restorer's tape located on lower left side. This image has been removed from the original sketchbook. Measures apprx 8" x 11".

Depicts the Cathedral of St. Donatiani Brugis. Measures apprx 6" x 8". Third image depicts the Castle of Male. Margin states that this is an ink drawing originally done for an engraving. Measures apprx 7" x 10". Next image depicts the Woburn Abbey. Measures apprx 8" x 10". The final image in this group depicts a small cottage in the woods. Unsigned. Measures apprx 5-1/2" x 7-1/2".

An absolutely beautiful still life of a bouquet of pale pink roses in full bloom with white lilac. These flowers delicate, fluttery and completely life-like. Conte and watercolor on brown paper. Professionally framed, measures 20" x 28-1/4", image size, and 27-3/4" x 36" framed. Signed "Raoul M De Longpre Fils" on the lower right corner and has a plaque bearing the artist's name on the frame.

This monumental piece is entitled "Wer niich liebt Wein, Weib Gesang, Bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang." This translates as "who doesn't like wine or women or songs stays always an idiot all his long life." This work was previously found in the The Alpine Village restaurant in the theatre district of Cleveland. Cherry frame is original to piece. This picture has impressive detailing and depicts a mealtime scene. Musicians and putti entertain the dinner guests. A medallion in the center of the image indicates the title of the piece. Image is apprx 60" x 28". Overall, this piece measures apprx 67" x 35".

"Pose for Portrait" sketch by Otto Henry Bacher is pencil on paper. Sketch depicts a younger person standing before a dresser. Signed "by Otto Bacher" in lower right corner and title is located in central section of paper. Measures apprx 7" x 9-1/2". Bacher studied under Gustave Boulanger, Carolus-Duran and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. His work can be found in the permanent collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art as well as the Fine Art Museum of San Fransico. He has been published in Schwabelweiss, (plate 18), Choice Etchings (London: Alexander Strahan, 1887),1879.
