330. A Carved Hornbill Skull, 19th Century
This is a 19th Century hand-carved hornbill skull from China. It features hand-carved figures in a landscape with an ox. Hornbill ivory is very rare and was extremely popular in China and the East Indies. The ivory, also known as Ho-ting, is a hard substance which is contained above the beak of the helmeted Hornbill. Gradually, as the bird grows older it develops a helmet on the top of the skull, which turns into a gleaming red color. Hornbill ivory first appeared in Chinese records during the Ming Dynasty, reserved only for royalty in hair ornaments, buttons and general decoration. This item has two malachite disks set into the eye sockets. Apprx 4-1/2"T x 8"L x 3-1/2"W.

332. Oriental Inlay Travel Chest, Circa Early 20th Century
This travel jewelry chest has mother of pearl inlay throughout and a red lacquered finish. The lid lifts open revealing a mirror and the front two quarters open to reveal ten hidden compartments. Brass hinges, corners and pull decorate the chest as well as two handles at the sides for transport. Apprx 8"T x 13"D x 10"W closed.

333. A Carved Opium Pipe, C. 19th Century
A Chinese opium pipe carved of bone with intricate carving of leafy bamboo shoots. Comprised of five sections and two end caps, this pipe is signed under the bowl in a scalloped cartouche. The mounting for the bowl appears to be chased with a forward fire breathing dragon and three men. Apprx 21-1/2"L.

Both carved goddesses stand on wooden bases. Flowing robes and ornate hair. One is apprx 6-1/4"T with base, the second is apprx 5-1/4"T with base. Unmarked and unsigned. Cream colored with light yellow toning.
