Sommer's work is found in many public collections including the National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is a well known Cleveland School artist.

Signed "Ratterman" in lower left corner. Paintings such as this one were painted "en grisaille" because they were used for reproduction as illustrations in books and periodicals prior to the introduction of four-color printing.
