Late 18th Century engraving of a Roman temple painting, standing male nude holding a bow and arrow, with purple drapped fabric. His hair is ornately bound with a wide blue ribbon. All hand colored. Figure is central with a 1" border of leaves and yellow ribbon swags. Plate is numbered upper right XLIV. Impression apprx 15" x 11", overall paper size apprx 20-1/2" x 12-1/2". Unsigned, on chain lined and watermarked paper.

102. Engraving after Poussin's "The Rescue of Pyrrhus"


Engraving by G. Chaseteau depicts Poussin's "The Rescue of Pyrrhus". The original oil painting is dated 1634 and is located in the Louvre in Paris. French text at the bottom describes the heroic rescue. This engraving is dated 1676. Text is repeated on the right side in latin. Measures apprx 17" x 20".

An engraving after Goltzius, a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) stranded on the coast at Katwijk. Van der Gouwen was a Dutch engraver and mapmaker, active in Anvers and Amsterdam. This is a double page engraving (crease down the center). Signed in the plate and dated 1598. Impression size apprx 10-6/8" x 13". overall paper apprx 12-5/8" x 15-7/8". Cream colored, chain lined paper with visible watermark.

Set of two etchings by David Deuchar feature a portrait of artist wearing a hat and cape. Second copper etching depicts a man and woman in conversation. Unsigned. Deuchar, a Scottish artist was active from 1771 to 1803. Images measure apprx 1-1/2" x 2".

"Los Caprichos: Alla va eso" (There it goes) Plate 66, 1799/l.p. Etching, 5th edition of 12, published by Calcografia for Real Academia 1881-1886. No visible watermark, cream colored laid paper. Impression from before the steel facing of the plate. Apprx 8-1/4" x 6-1/2" plate mark, (image apprx 18.8 x 12.4cm). Overall measures apprx 11" x 7-3/4". The eighty etchings of "Los Caprichos" were the first collection Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia, issued in the ensuing years by that institution.
