140. Eugene Speicher (American, 1883-1962) "Head of a Man". Pencil on paper, signed lower right corner. In 1936 New York artist Eugene Edward Speicher was named Esquire magazine's "Most Important Living Artist." Speicher studied in New York with several notable artists including William Merritt Chase, Edward Hopper and George Bellows. Speicher was said to limit his portraiture to six portraits per year, in order to spend significant amounts of time working on landscapes and figure painting. Speicher has been honored with many awards including the Beck Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as the Potter Palmer Gold Medal from the Art Institute of Chicago. 145. Indian Manuscript Leaf Leaf from an Indian manuscript. Professionally matted. Such manuscripts contained the texts of the epics, the Puranas and Sthala Puranas. Hand-written, the script is encased in a gilded border. There are four columns of script divided by one horizontal sections of red script. All of the writing is in red and black ink. Diacritical dots indicate that this is a later manuscript leaf. Written in the Urdu language in the Khat-e-Faarsi style. Leaf measures apprx 10" x 15".
