Framed color lithograph is entitled "Mixing the Colors" and depicts four naughty kittens playing in a set of paints. This image is also a still life and features a water pitcher, several glasses, as well as an overturned book and paintbrushes. Signed in lower left corner. Printed in lower right corner is "Copyrighted 1898 and Published by Amuco Pub. Co. 49 Barclay St. NYC, USA." This image has been made in the manner of Jules LeRoy. Image measures apprx 20" x 25-1/2." Matted and framed this piece measures apprx 32-1/2" x 37-1/2." Frame is made from dark wood carved with leaf and vine pattern.

A steel engraving of King George III, after a painting by Sir William Beechey, engraved by Benjamin Smith, published by J & J Boydell, December 1st, 1804. Margins appear to be intact, full plate impression, rich tones and very nice paper condition. Plate size apprx 23" x 16-1/4", overall in period frame apprx 28" x 21-1/2". Gallery tag on verso from Norman Blackburn, Antiquarian Printseller, London.

A wonderful lithograph of the profile of a woman wearing a lavish yellow and burgundy robe, hands folded in her lap, with an ornate crown. She sits on a throne with a medallion behind her and stylized flowers on her right side. It is apprx 21-3/4" x 16-1/2" and is not framed.

140. Eugene Speicher (American, 1883-1962)


"Head of a Man". Pencil on paper, signed lower right corner. In 1936 New York artist Eugene Edward Speicher was named Esquire magazine's "Most Important Living Artist." Speicher studied in New York with several notable artists including William Merritt Chase, Edward Hopper and George Bellows. Speicher was said to limit his portraiture to six portraits per year, in order to spend significant amounts of time working on landscapes and figure painting. Speicher has been honored with many awards including the Beck Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as the Potter Palmer Gold Medal from the Art Institute of Chicago. Overall measurement is apprx 21" x 27-1/2". Paper measures apprx 12-1/2" x 19".

"The Home Of A Wharf Rat". Watercolor on paper. City skyline is visible in the distance. Signed "R. McLellan, 1937" in lower right corner. Image measures apprx 8-1/2" x 11". Overall measures apprx 17" x 20". McLellan exhibited extensively at the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Later in his life he taught life drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia.

A pair titled "Windblown" and "Fluttering Trees". Drypoint etchings on cream colored wove paper. Titled lower left and signed lower right on both. They are tipped into a mat, including overmat. Impressions apprx 7" x 5-1/2", overall paper size apprx 9" x 7-1/2". Byxbe had a studio in Estes Park, Colorado, concentrating on the surrounding mountain landscapes and local elements. Both items are from the turner Art Gallery, Denver, CO.

Indian Manuscript Leaf

145. Indian Manuscript Leaf


Leaf from an Indian manuscript. Professionally matted. Such manuscripts contained the texts of the epics, the Puranas and Sthala Puranas. Hand-written, the script is encased in a gilded border. There are four columns of script divided by one horizontal sections of red script. All of the writing is in red and black ink. Diacritical dots indicate that this is a later manuscript leaf. Written in the Urdu language in the Khat-e-Faarsi style. Leaf measures apprx 10" x 15". Overall with mat measures apprx 15" x 21".
