Engraving by Callot is entitled "Ne voila des braues messagers qui vont errants par pays estrangers." This roughly translates as "here are the messengers who travel across foreign lands." This engraving depicts a group of travelers on horse and on foot. Signed by Callot in lower left corner. Image measures apprx 5" x 9".

These images depict various characters from everyday life, including a ragged old man with a cane, an old woman with a rosary, a beggar, a man with a wooden leg, a mother with three children and an old woman with cats. Prints are numbered in lower right corner, 1, 2, 4, 6-10, 12-20 and 23-25. All signed "Callot" in lower left corner. Images measure apprx 4" x 6". Mounted to paper. Overall size is apprx 8" x 10".

Also included in this lot of engravings are an image of Mestolino, dancing goblins, Cap. Csgangarato and a study of a roman soldier. Images range in size from apprx 5-1/2" x 7-1/2" to 2-1/2" x 3". Engraving executed by Mariette in three vertical registers depicts small putti, sybils, leaves, feathers and various architectural adornments. Pierre Mariette (and later his son) had a printshop in the "Rue St Jacques" in Paris, under the sign of "L'esperance" (hope). Size of image is apprx 6-1/2" x 9". Signed "Mariette, ex." in lower right corner. This image was published by Mariette c.17th Century.

Two engravings. First engraving is entitled "Horatiana" and is from a book, page 203. Identified as Otto Van Veen in pencil. Dated 1607. "Horatiana" depicts a skeleton reaching into an urn and handing something to a cloaked man. Heavy clouds are visible in the distance. From the book "Emblemata" by Otto Van Veen. Letters "Cc ij" located in lower right corner. Second image is entitled "Saul Consulting a Witch at Endor." Upper right corner reads "1. Sam XXVIII. 7. p. 661." This engraving depicts a witch standing above a brewing cauldron. Snakes appear from the sky. Three figures cower in fear. In lower margin is inscribed "To the right Reverend Father in God, Stephen Lord Bishop of Exeter this plate is most humbly inscribed by his lordship, most dutiful son and servant, Thomas Stackhoule." First image measures apprx 7-1/2" x 10-1/2". Second image measures apprx 10" x 14".

An 18th Century engraving after a Roman temple painting, standing male nude holding a lyre, with rose colored drapped fabric. His hair is ornately bound. Hand colored. Figure is central with a 1" border of braided branches. Plate is numbered upper right XLV. Impression apprx 15" x 11", overall paper size apprx 20-1/2" x 12-1/2". Unsigned, on chain lined and watermarked paper.

These engravings are from the temple drawings of Bartoli after the famous Greek scuptures of Polydorus. Scenes depict a group of people traveling to the marketplace. They bring with them several barrels of wine, baskets of fruits and vegetables and animals. First image is entitled "Aegyptiorum Sive Afrorum Pereginatio." The second image is untitled. Both images are inscribed with the name "Petrus Sancti Bartoli." Plates numbered 3 and 4 in lower right corner. Both images measure apprx 6" x 18".
