| 156. Unknown Artist (American, 19th-early 20th Century)
19th century pencil drawing depicts the head of a classical god. His head is tilted back and his eyes are closed in a tranquil-sleep like state. Image measures apprx 17" x 17". Framed, the drawing measures apprx 19" x 19". Illegible signature on lower left corner. This piece is a fine example of a fine art student's exercise in drawing class. Fragments of sculpture housed in museums were traditionally used until the middle of the 20th Century for instruction in practicing rendering from direct observation in the studio. Form, light & shadow techniques were refined from the close observation of these classical objects. The drawings such as this that survive have come to be a very desirable image for collectors. 80/120 Sold $212.75 back to catalog |
