| 308. "Venus Commanding the Vulcan Army", C.1744-1820
A Vienna oval plaque features a neo-classical scene in which Venus, the goddess of love commands the Vulcan army, consisting of numerous cyclopes. This scene is filled with images of mythology, including a chariot resting in a corner, Cupid sitting on Venus' lap, helmets and shields that litter the ground and a sacrificial lamb's head that is visible near the bottom of the image. Stenciled gold feathered design adorns the outer rim of the plate. Signed "Winkler" in the lower right corner. It is hand-painted and the verso of plaque is inscribed "Venus commandant a Vulcain les armes pour Enee." The hallmark of Royal Vienna, the beehive, is also visible on verso. Inscribed with blue underglaze. Plaque measures apprx 10" x 15". Encompassed by gold velvet and gilded wood frame. Frame has decorative rose and feather motif.
