John the Baptist Beheaded. Oil on canvas. John the Baptist was imprisoned and later beheaded by King Herod. His head was brought to a vengeful Herodias, who was said to stab the tongue with her dagger. In this painting John's face has a deathly pallor. A dagger is visible beneath the neck as well as blood. Canvas measures apprx 25" x 20". Framed, this painting measures apprx 31" x 27". Unsigned.
