122. George Cattermole (English, 1800-1868)

"The Battle". Watercolor on paper, depicting a scene in which a monk sits by a fire. He is joined by eight monks, four on each side of the fireplace. Sitting across from the monk is a man dressed in armor. A young boy kneels at his feet. Artist's monogram is visible on bench. Image measures apprx 12" x 16-1/2". Overall measures apprx 20" x 24-1/2".

Cattermole was well known for his watercolor paintings and illustrations. His illustrations were featured in such works as Charles Dickens "Barnaby Rudge." He was nicknamed "Kittenmoles" by Dickens. Cattermole was offered many commissions by Queen Victoria and later offered a knighthood, which he refused.
