London, La Societe Typographique, 1773. Octavo. Two volumes. XXXII,326; 412pp. Helvetius (1715-71) left from the lucrative position of Fermier-general (tax-collector) in 1751, to retire to the country in Peche and work on philosophy. He was considered the "Father of Utilitarianism." Leather end boards with gilded tooling along outer edges, marbled interior. Gilt tooling on spine with inserted leather bands. End paper is inscribed "de la bibliotheque de L. Proudhomme, professeur de mathematiques aux ecole de navigation." Vol. I, 643 pp. Vol. II, 760 pp.
