337. A Fine Antique Heriz Rug

This Heriz rug measures apprx 10'8"-1/2" x 7'6" and has a beautiful central medallion with eight edges, bordered by a wide band with scrolling flowers on a vine and diamond cartouche. Birds in the corner spandrels. Flanked by two thinner borders with geometric patterns. The main field color is red with many other colors including teal, yellow, rose, light blue and dark blue, dark brown, camel, salmon and cool ivory. Old and antique examples of Heriz have various blue tones and tend to be more rare. Brown, beige and turquoise shades also indicate older pieces. The colors are all clean, vibrant and bright. Cotton weft.

Heriz rugs are one of the most famous Persian Rugs among collectors. The strongest characteristic of a Heriz is a large single medallion that has eight edges, usually with a red field. The small town of Heriz is the center of the weaving areas in Azerbaijan.
