343. Bakhtiari Rug

Bakhtiari rugs are usually among the best known as the garden carpets with their flower and tendril-filled compartment designs (Khesti Design). This particular rug is somewhat unusual as most rugs in the Kheshti design have rectangular panels, while this one has hexagonal shaped panels. The central panel is a striking green on a predominantly red field. The symmetrical pattern is completed with shades of dark and light blue, ivory, yellow with green borders. This rug has four borders, the widest with a floral pattern, the other three with geometric designs. Measures apprx 10'9" x 7'2".

Bakhtiari rugs are named for the Bakhtiari tribe found in the area southwest of Isfahan. The Bakhtiari tribe is located in a region known for having very luxurious wool, which produces excellent carpets.
