492. Pair of Ivory Royal Figures


A pair of royal figures intricately caved out of ivory. Each figure sits in a beautifully detailed throne; hers embellished around the edge with what appears to be bird heads; his with possibly lion or dragon heads. Both of their robes have fine details. Verso marked with oriental character markings. On pierced wooden bases, these date circa late 19th century and measure apprx 9-3/4" H x 4-1/4" x 4" W at base.

A lovely set of eight idols, including two females and six males, all standing on pedestals, in different poses, holding various items. They are all intricately carved in great detail. Circa late 19th century. In blue linen case with blue padded satin interior, each idol having its own compartment. Each idol measures apprx 5" H x 1-7/8" W at base.

An impressive glazed figure of the protective spirit of Shoki, or Chung Kuei as known in China, in flowing robes while holding an open fan with characters in right hand. Left hand is raised with fingers in a blessing position. A small stamped seal is found on the interior of the hollow form. Overall this figure measures apprx 25" H x 12" W. It is accompanied by a certificate of antiquity from Hong Kong, reviewed in 1978.

This unique figure related to the Chinese mythological creature is a combination of of many animals. The overall body is red glaze with fine crackelure. Highlights on legs and face, beard and tail in yellow glaze. The dragon has a black beard and hooves, and yellow glazed horns. No visible markings or signatures. This piece measures apprx 11" H x 12"L x 5" W. Includes certificate of antiquity from Hong Kong, inspected in 1978.

Each piece painted in underglaze-blue with pagodas and water scenes within a Nanking and foliate-patterned border. Decorated with honey gilt borders and diapering. Service includes nineteen pieces with three other pieces not consistent with the service. Matching pieces include six footed tea bowls apprx 5" D, one spoon tray apprx 5" x 3-/2", teapot with flat lid apprx 5-1/2" with liner apprx 4-3/4", a footed saucer dish apprx 6", one footed waste bowl apprx 5-1/2" x 3-1/4", six footed tea bowls apprx 3" D x 2" H and one lid, possibly from a sugar bowl appr 4-1/4" and a larger saucer dish apprx 6" D. Additional pieces include a octagonal tray apprx 11" x 8", lidded creamer apprx 6" T and a spoon tray or teapot tray apprx 5-1/2" D.

A transitional plate painted after a design by Cornelis Pronk, depicting an Oriental lady and her parasol-bearing attendant watching three colorful waterbirds. The plate, with a honeycomb diaper border reserved with vignettes of figures and waterfowl on the rim. Painting in underglaze-blue, iron-red, brown and gilding. The underside of the rim is painted in underglaze-blue with seven insects. Footed rim is triangular and slightly glazed. Verso has sticker from Elinor Gordon. Apprx 10-3/8" D.

A export footed rice bowl, apprx 4-1/4"D x 2-1/4"H. Deer, stags and water buffalo in lakeside views. Quilted patterns and wonderful details, very little gilt details on deer and floral center. Elinor Gordon sticker on verso.

Large Japanese Urn

499. Large Japanese Urn


A large bronze urn, measuring apprx 42-1/2" H x 15" in diameter at opening. Comprised of three parts, the base stands on three bracket feet, followed by a middle section with an ocean theme with a crab, a fish and a crayfish. The final section is the actual urn with several oriental warrior type figures mounted on stylized oriental horse-type animals. The figures are screwed in through the urn and some have come loose. The neck of the urn has two scrolling handles with budding vines winding across. On the background of the vase are intricate geometric patterned details.

Baluster form decorated with raised design of blooming poppies, butterflies and daisies. Standard Satsuma patterning on neck bordered by a scalloped band with raised pattern, or "chicken skin". This is also found at base. Overall gold accents. No visible signatures or markings. Each vase measures apprx 19" H x 11" W at shoulder.
