Sterling silver repousse cheese server from S. Kirk & Sons. Beautifully adorned with roses, poppies and various floral elements. Handle is stamped "S. Kirk & Sons" as is the blade of the cheese server. Overall measures apprx 6-1/2". Weight is apprx 1.5 Troy oz.

Samuel Kirk started his silver company in August 1815 in Baltimore with fellow silversmith, John Smith. The partnership was dissolved in 1821 and Kirk carried on alone. In 1828 Samuel Kirk introduced the reposse treatment for silverware. Kirk was probably inspired by East India silversmiths but his patterns were uniquely his own. Samuel Kirk’s eldest son, Henry Kirk, became a partner in 1846 and the firm’s name was changed to Samuel Kirk & Son. Two other sons, Charles and Edwin were admitted as partners in 1861 and 1863 and the firm’s name was changed to Samuel Kirk & Sons. Samuel Kirk & Sons was incorporated in 1924 and became Samuel Kirk & Son, Inc. In 1979 Samuel Kirk & Son, Inc. was purchased by the Stieff Company and the firm’s name was changed to The Kirk Stieff Company.
