204. Archimedes Marquetry Inlaid Panel, c. Mid 17th Century

Archimedes inlaid scene features inlaid wood, mother-of-pearl, ivory, pewter and brass. Cherubs and shells with grotesque faces accent the outer sections of the panel. Made from a maritage of hardwoods including fruitwood and possibly walnut. Dates c. mid-17th century. Was originally a desktop, measures apprx 30-1/2" H x 64" W.

Archimedes was an inventor and writer, well-known for his war machines, the invention of the planetarium as well as many writings on the functions of mechanical devices. He was also regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians and scientists of all time. Archimedes was killed by a Roman soldier in apprx 211 B.C.
