459. Haviland Hand-Painted Rose Bowl

Haviland hand-painted rose bowl has a biomorphic petal-like shape. This bowl is adorned with blossoming yellow and pink roses. Stamped "Haviland, France" on verso in light green. Inscribed in yellow "Mrs. W.C. Bacon, 1904". Bowl measures apprx 3-1/2" H x 10" W.

Haviland porcelain was created when David Haviland formed a tableware import company in New York City in 1838. He formed the company with his older brother Daniel, and christened the company D.G. and D. Haviland Co. They began importing French porcelain but found the products to be unpopular with the American clientele. David then made his first journey to France in 1840 to "negotiate" directly with the French manufacturers in order to obtain products more suitable to his market in the US.
