| 313. Two Vintage Maté Gourds & Bombilla Tea Straws, Late 19th Century
Pair of Mate gourds with bombilla straws. The first set is small black gourd with metal overlay at base and rim. Verso is stamped "Alpaca" and "Noustria Argentina", straw appears to be matching and also marked. Cup apprx 3-1/2", straw apprx 6"L. The second gourd is in a presentation case. The "cup" is designed with metal overlay on a patterned body. The top and bottom of gourd are capped with metal, possibly copper, one with intials "T.A.C.". The opening is covered in possibly pewter with a brass colored foliate pattern of bright cut metal. The straw has copper mouthpiece on a sterling body which is marked "800". It has an applied family crest on the straw and hand chased designs. Gourd apprx 3-1/2" D, straw apprx 8-1/2" L. These straws were used to sip tea from the gourd. The filter at the end of the straw prevents the loose tea leaves from travelling up the straw. Yerba Mate (may-tay) is a traditional beverage in many parts of South America. The beverage is consumed throughout the day and is frequently enjoyed as a social drink. 250/350 Sold $207.00 back to catalog |
