180. Alabaster "Venus De Milo", c. 19th Century

After the famous Greek sculpture "Venus De Milo", also known as the Aphrodite of Melos. This alabaster copy measures apprx 33" H x 11" W x 9" D. This is a figure of a nude female with pleated drapery wrapped around her waist. The figure is sans arms, as was the original. Made from a lovely cream-colored alabaster.

Alabaster was originally used for grand tables and furniture during the age of stone. Due to the ease with which it is carved, it became a popular statuary stone. The Venus de Milo is a popular subject amongst sculptors. Her graceful body symbolizes an ideal of beauty that many long for but none attain. The original Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820 by a peasant named Yorgos. He discovered her broken body in an underground cavern on the Agean island of Melos. He knew that such treasures of antiquity were to be turned over to the Turkish authorities but for a time he hid the sculpture in his barn. The secret was disclosed and the officials took the sculpture from him and loaded her onto a Turkish vessel and transferred to a French frigate off the coast of Melos.
