| 228. American Painted and Stenciled Boston Style Rocking Chair
A fine rocking chair, painted black and stenciled across the top slat with green and gold decorations also with deep red glaze highlights throughout. Additional green and gold details are painted throughout the chair, including borders on the seat, arms, legs and spindles. On verso of the seat "Erie, PA" is written in black paint. Over that 968/1000 is marked in white chalk. The Boston rocker is a variation of the windsor rocker, developed around 1840 in New England. It has a high back (several spindles extend above the main back, or six to nine curved, long spindles) topped by a larger crest rail and a wood seat that curved down in front and up in the rear, with arms followed the curve of the seat. often painted black or white or stenciled. The Boston rocker was the first mass-produced rocking chair and after 1840 the Boston rocker was mostly made by machine. 200/400 Sold $368.00 back to catalog |
