186. Pierre-Jean David D'Angers (French, 1789-1856)

"Augustin-Jean Fresnel", circa 1850, inscribed Fresnel Membre de L'Institut, with Reduction Mechanique A. Collas Brevete Seal. Bronze with deep brownish black patina. Apprx 9 3/4" H. It is inscribed "Fresnel Membre De L'Institut" across the front of the base. Provenance: Collection of J.A. Birch.

D'Angers was born March 12, 1789 in Angers, France. The son of a carver, D'Angers went to Paris at age 17 to study under Philippe-Laurent Roland. In 1811 he won the Prix de Rome and became a a well known sculptor, who revolted against the prevailing Neoclassical style of early 19th-century French sculpture.
