77. August Biehle (American, 1885-1979)

Pair of cubist style figure drawings by the Cleveland School artist. Graphite and colored pencil on paper. The larger of the two depicts Eve and the Devil with a portion of an apple. The other image depicts three figures standing in the background and a seated figure, possibly a female, in the foreground. Both images are signed in the lower right corner "A J Biehle" in ball-point pen and are matted and framed under glass. First image measures apprx 7-1/4" H x 8" W, overall framed apprx 14" H x 14-1/4" W. Second apprx 8" H x 9-1/4" W, overall apprx 14-1/2" H x 15-1/2" W.

The son of a German immigrant painter of decorative murals in Cleveland, Ohio, Biehle achieved distinction as one of Ohio's most prolific and talented artists, especially noted for design and draftsmanship. His paintings have been in numerous exhibitions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler Museum of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City.
