157. Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778)

"Veduta dell'insigne Basilica Vaticana coll'ampio Portico, e Piazza adjacente", St. Peter's with forecourt and colonnades, a bird's-eye view. A first state engraving on thick creme color, chain lined paper with watermark. Partially matted at lower margin, not affecting the image. Engraved title and names of five states and engraved Piranesi name. A bright and clear impression. Plate size apprx 18-1/4" x 28", paper size apprx 21-3/4" x 30-1/4". Provenance: From the personal collection of Pittsburgh fine art dealer Charles A. Wunderly, of Wunderly Galleries, which were active c. 1894-1970,
