530. Noritaké Part Tea Service, Early 20th Century

This hand-painted and gilt porcelain tea service is comprised of six plates, six saucers, six tea cups, one creamer, one waste bowl and one bun tray. All pieces have been hand-painted with with images of pagodas, wooden bridges, people dressed in kimonos, birds, trees and mountains. Teacups have gilded handles. Most pieces are stamped "Noritake, Made in Japan" on verso, however several have faint ghost marks. Plates measure apprx 6" in diameter, saucers measure apprx 5-1/2" in diameter, cups measure apprx 2" H x 5" W, creamer measures apprx 4" H x 5" W, bowl measures apprx 2-1/2" H x 5" W and tray measures apprx 10" D.

Faint mark on verso is the "Komaro" symbol, crowned with "Noritaké" and below the mark "Made In Japan". The center symbol said to be taken from the Japanese character "Komaro", meaning "overcoming difficulties". This mark is said to have been registered in London for the UK market already in the 1908. The curled up ends of the Komaro symbol distinguish this mark from later versions.
