161. Woody Grumbo (American 20th Century)

Entitled "Deer and the Elements" in pencil at lower right of over mat. Pochoir is signed Grumbo in lower right corner. This pochoir depicts a blue deer amongst an abstracted landscape. Image measures apprx 12-1/2" H x 16-1/2" W. Overall with mat this piece measures apprx 21-1/2" H x 24-1/2" W. The artist "Gumbo" is very likely Woody Grumbo, an American printmaker. Image printed on cream-colored wove paper. His work is in the University of Montana Museum of Fine Arts Original Print Collection.

Pochoir is the French term for stencil. The term is applied to a class of prints usually hand-coloured through a series of carefully cut out stencils. This process was much used in Paris during the early decades of the 20th century and was especially popular in the art deco period and was also used for fashion plates.
