| 480. A French Encrier, Late 19th Century
White glazed porcelain inkwell features a rounded dish with attached cylinder. Lid is marked "Encrier J.L. a Pompe, Paris". Verso of inkwell as well as lid are inscribed with the number 2. Inkwell measures apprx 6" H x 7" W. Encrier is the French term for desk top inkstand, which was used to hold pens, ink, sand and writing instruments. Ink is poured into cylinder and would drain into two small fonts. Each font has a small hole in which the brush could be dipped to drain excess ink. Attached to rounded dish are two stands where the brushes or pens would be kept. 125/175 Sold $63.25 back to catalog |
