1. William Shayer Sr. (British, 1787-1879)

"The Picnic". Oil on canvas, signed lower right corner "Wm Shayer". Scene depicts a young child atop a horse. She is joined by a mother figure and a small donkey. A cloaked man is visible behind the horse and donkey. Several other figures are barely visible in the distance. In the lower right corner is a small dog, a cooking pot and a wicker basket. The blue sky is filled with fluffy white clouds. Canvas size is apprx 25" H x 30" W. Overall with frame apprx 30"H x 35"W. Gilt frame with name plaque, title and artists dates.

William Shayer was born in Southampton and spent his entire life in Hampshire.  Although principally self-taught, he attained great popularity during his lifetime and his works fetched high prices. He won several Art Union prizes and was a prolific painter, exhibiting many works at the principal London venues. He exhibited 388 works at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1825 to 1879 and was elected a member in 1829, at the British Institution from 1827 to 1862, and at the Royal Academy between 1820 and 1843.
