304. Etched Crystal Masonic Casket, French, c. 1870

Either Baccarat or Val St. Lambert. A custom ordered etched casket with gilt bronze Dore mounts, mirrored bottom and hinged lid. Scrolled and bun bronze feet with gilt. Hebrew lettering translates to "Watch Tower". Finely carved panels with three major works; the front panel has a face, bird in flight, two trumpets, wreath, torch and vines; top panel has crossed wheat and branch in an oval bay wreath, toped with a bird; the back panel has a stringed instrument, grotesque face, upside-down torch, hunters bow and arrows, "eye" and ribbon in a bow. The sides have geometric patterns with branches. Etched borders of leaves and berries on each panel. Unsigned, measures apprx 7-1/2" H x 12" W x 8" D.
