712. Original Map of Nijmegen from "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", C. 16th/17th Century
A hand colored plate from the atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", edited by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg. The atlas contained 546 prospects, bird-eye views and map views of cities from all over the world. Copper plate engraving on chain lined paper with hand coloring and gilt work. In the center is Noviomagus (modern Nijmegen), situated between the rivers Rhine and Meuse. Lower left depicts two figures in local dress. Upper left and right margins have finely detailed shields along with like rendered cartouche at lower right. The verso has a printed account of the town's history, situation and commerce. All text is in Latin. Plate size apprx 13" x 15-1/2", overall in frame apprx 16-3/4" x 21".

713. A Pair of Illuminated Pages, C. 17th/18th Century
Both illustrations cut from a prayer book and are hand painted on vellum, in french mats and framed in simple wood and gilt frames. The first depicts Christ washing the disciples feet, lower margin with German text in gold over maroon pigment. Detailed interior with strong color. Verso has oval monochromatic illustration of an angel surrounded by text in German and Latin. The second image shows Christ about to bear the cross before Pilate. Similarly styled as the other painting with many details and like text. Verso also with oval image and text in German and Latin. Both image sizes apprx 4-3/4" x 3", overall with frames apprx 9-3/4" x 7-3/4".

This map has been trimmed from a larger page, possibly a book of maps. Map is on chain lined paper. Key is located in lower right corner. Plate size is apprx 13-1/4" H x 23" W. Paper size is apprx 13-3/4" H x 23" W. Overall size with mat is apprx 21-1/4" H x 31' W. This second state map is by Jean F. Bernard and dates c. 1731

Lippencott & Co, 1860. 412 pp. From the Port Chester Public Library, Port Chester, New York. This volume includes 27 embossed plates of coins in metallic tints and a folding statement of mintages. This chart has been repaired with tape. Purple end boards have decorative stamped medallion in center. This is the earliest record of the holdings of the United States Mint, actually written by Mint employees George Bull and William DuBois.
