"Los Caprichos: Soplones" (Scavengers) Plate 48, 1799/l.p. Etching, 5th edition of 12, published by Calcografia for Real Academia 1881-1886. No visible watermark, cream colored laid paper. Impression from before the steel facing of the plate. The eighty etchings of "Los Caprichos" were the first collection Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia, issued in the ensuing years by that institution. Apprx 8-1/4" x 6-1/2" plate mark, (image apprx 18.8 x 12.4cm). Overall measures apprx 11" x 7-3/4".

"The Dormition of the Virgin", pencil on paper after the original oil painting by Carlo Veneziano Saraceni (Italian, 1579-1620). Several distraught people have gathered around the Virgin and are mourning her death. The religious subject matter is not typical of Abbot, who is better known for his ink drawings of landscapes and figures. Matted and framed under glass. The frame is an attractive gold and black frame. Apprx 19"x 18-1/4 overall and image size is 12-1/2" x 11-3/4". On verso are several framing stickers from the Chestnut Hill Framing, Massachusetts.

The first is "Persica vulgaris, Pecher commun", plate number "T.1.No.71", and "Didier sculp", lower right. The second is "Pyrus communis, Poirier commun". plate number "T.2.No.29", and "Jarry sculp" lower right. Bessa was student of Redouté and Van Spaendonck. Measure apprx 16-1/2" H x 10" W.
