107. Francisco Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828) "Los Caprichos: Soplones" (Scavengers) Plate 48, 1799/l.p. Etching, 5th edition of 12, published by Calcografia for Real Academia 1881-1886. No visible watermark, cream colored laid paper. Impression from before the steel facing of the plate. The eighty etchings of "Los Caprichos" were the first collection Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia, issued in the ensuing years by that institution. Apprx 8-1/4" x 6-1/2" plate mark, (image apprx 18.8 x 12.4cm). 109. John White Abbot (British, 1763-1851) "The Dormition of the Virgin", pencil on paper after the original oil painting by Carlo Veneziano Saraceni (Italian, 1579-1620). Several distraught people have gathered around the Virgin and are mourning her death. The religious subject matter is not typical of Abbot, who is better known for his ink drawings of landscapes and figures. Matted and framed under glass. The frame is an attractive gold and black frame. Apprx 19"x 18-1/4 overall and image size is 12-1/2" x 11-3/4". Lami was a student of Antoine-Jean Gros, Horace Vernet and studied at the 'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. 122. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901) Five lithographed images of Yvette Guilbert from the Paris cafe concerts of the late 1890's. Lautrec was fascinated by Guilbert. She was famous for her off color, spoken songs, emphasizing the language with expressive movements of her arms, which were always in full length black gloves.
