610. Satsuma "Shell" Dish


Beautiful hand-painted Satsuma "Shell" dish. This dish takes the form of a seashell with shell accents on the underside. Interior of the dish has a scene with what appear to be Japanese fishermen. No visible markings or signatures on this piece. Measures apprx 3" H x 12" W.

611. A Hand Carved Helmeted Hornbill Skull, C. Late 19th Century


"Buceros Vigil" from China, commonly known as Helmeted Hornbill ivory, it features hand-carved figures making music and dancing. Hornbill ivory is very rare and was extremley popular in China and the East Indies. The ivory, also known as Ho-ting, is a hard substance which is contained above the beak of the helmeted Hornbill. Gradually as the bird grows older it develops a helmet on the top of the skull. The ivory is covered with a gleaming red coating. Hornbill ivory first appeared in Chinese records during the Ming Dynasty. The sides are carved and gilt with Chinese characters, possibly signed by the artist. Complete with wood stand, skull measures apprx 4-3/4" x 8-3/4" x 3-1/4".

Tri-level sterling silver container features a cloisonne design of violet, sky blue, teal and lime green dragons. Dragons are accented with small round coral and turquoise stones with a braided setting. The upper rim of the lid is accented with lime green and violet "awabi's" or bats. The awabi is a symbol of health and happiness. The top of the lid is accented with four C-scrolls and a rounded turquoise stone. Verso is stamped "Silver". Interior of each compartment has a rich, gold wash. Overall this piece measures apprx 6-1/8" H x 4" D.

Japanese charger features a figure wearing a loin cloth and numerous necklaces. He stands in a river or ocean with teal cranes sweeping across the background. Signed in characters on verso. This charger comes in a wooden box with printed characters on interior and exterior of lid. Charger measures apprx 14-1/4" in diameter. Box measures apprx 15-1/2" H x 15-1/2" W.

Large, double handled cloisonne urn has two registers of teal enamel with various oriental-inspired designs in red, blue, white and green. Second register near the top features cloisonne designs of flowers and dragons. The cast brass handles are shaped like birds with pointed beaks. Located between the cloisonne registers are two sections featuring a design incised coffers. This urn measures apprx 12" H x 8-1/2" W.

This modern cloisonne egg has a white enameled background with lavender and lime green flowers and leaves. Also accenting the white background is a teal and violet exotic bird. Verso is accented with turquoise scrolling designs and is punctured so the egg may rest upon a carved wooden base. This piece is unmarked and unsigned. Measures apprx 12-1/4" H x 8" W without wooden base. Base measures apprx 2-1/4" H.

Carved from a medium color apple jade, this figure holds a branch with peaches, a symbol of fertility. A patina had been rubbed on the carving to expose the linear detailed carving, most visible in the beard, face and hair. Highly polished. Unsigned, apprx 8-1/4" tall.
