679. Third Preliminary Painting for Aubusson Tapestry

Preliminary painting for the Aubusson tapestries depicts a bouquet of roses and wildflowers in a basket. This floral arrangement is framed with a border of wildflowers against a sage green background. Dated c. early 19th century, France. These paintings were used a guide for the creation of the Aubusson tapestries. Originally the tapestries were hung from walls, however later they were used as floor coverings. Paper size is apprx 21" H x 39-1/2" H. With decorative frame this painting measures apprx 34-1/2" H x 53-1/4" W.

By the mid seventeenth century, the political and cultural climate affected the tapestry-weaving industry and in 1665 an ancient tapestry workshop at Aubusson was granted a royal charter to produce coarser and, therefore, cheaper commercial wall-hangings for the modest homes of those other than the rich and famous.
