609. Ono Bakufu, (Japanese, 1888-1976)

"Dai Nihon gyorui gashu (Great Japanese Fish Picture Collection)", five illustrations depicting swimming fish, 72 prints published between 1937-42. Printed on shikishiban paper. All five are signed "Bakufu" in Japanese, one also signed B. Ohno. Finely printed with delicate lines and gradation of colors. Highlights applied with mica flecks. Apprx image size (oban tate-e) 10-1/2" x 15", overall with frames apprx 16-3/4" x 20-3/4".

"B. Tokyo. Moved to Kansai after the 1923 earthquake. Exhibited oil painting at Teiten in 1929. Honorary member of Hyogo prefecture academy of fine arts. Member of Taiheiyogakai. Produced many landscape and fish prints including Great Japanese Fish Picture Collection (Dai Nihon gyorui gashu), 1940, published by Kyoto Hanga-in; blocks were carved by Matsuda and Kikuda: printed by Shinagawa, Nagae, Uchida, Ono." --'Guide to Modern Japanese Prints: 1900-1975' by H.
