| 712. Original Map of Nijmegen from "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", C. 16th/17th Century
A hand colored plate from the atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", edited by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg. The atlas contained 546 prospects, bird-eye views and map views of cities from all over the world. Copper plate engraving on chain lined paper with hand coloring and gilt work. In the center is Noviomagus (modern Nijmegen), situated between the rivers Rhine and Meuse. Lower left depicts two figures in local dress. Upper left and right margins have finely detailed shields along with like rendered cartouche at lower right. The verso has a printed account of the town's history, situation and commerce. All text is in Latin. Plate size apprx 13" x 15-1/2", overall in frame apprx 16-3/4" x 21".
