"The Dragon Arum", quarto aquatint engraving, plate XXII. Engraved by Quilley after the painting by Peter Henderson for Dr. Robert John Thornton's "The Temple of Flora". Lower corners margins state "Henderson pinx" and "Quilley sculp". Titled in lower center margin "The Dragon Arum, London, Published by Dr. Thornton, July 1, 1811". A volcano is erupting in the background. Added aquatint in foreground and middle distance. Plate size is apprx 14-3/4"H x 11"W. Overall paper size is apprx 15-1/8"H x 12"W. With mat this piece measures apprx 19"H x 15"W. Created in tribute to Swedish botanist, Linnæus, this presentation of large sized floral prints is considered by many to be the most magnificent such work ever produced. 200/400 Sold $586.50 back to catalog |
