226. Carved Wooden Deity, India, ca. 17th Century


Carved hard wood Deity originally came from an Indian temple and was secured for a Reverend E.J. Nicholson. Wooden carving depicts a figure attached to a carved ledge. Measures apprx 16-1/2" H x 5-1/2" W. Hanging device is attached to verso, as well as hand written sticker indicating origin of this piece.

227. Tibeten-Nepalese Thangka, ca. 17th/18th Century


Tibetan-Nepalese Thangka is attached to a carved wooden dowel and mounted within a glass shadow box. Textile has been painted with vignettes of people, tigers, flowers and vines and is accented with a red ruffle and hanging red ribbons and a silk border and gold braided threads. Textile measures apprx 19" H x 17" W.

Gilt wood Buddha wears a long, draped robe. Background for this figure is in the shape of a pointed arch with flowers and scrolls. Arch and feet feature pegs, which would be inserted into slots within the base for a larger shrine. Figure measures apprx 16" H x 5" W. Arched background measures apprx 20" H x 8-1/2" W. Overall with base apprx 23-1/2".

Pair of Tibetian oil on canvas paintings are adhered to cardboard backings. First painting depicts several gods and goddesses against a medallion background. Second painting is similar in subject matter with a slightly different layout. Each piece of canvas measures apprx 21-1/2" H x 15-1/4" W. Overall size is apprx 24-3/4" H x 19" W.
