118. Leopold Robert (Swiss, 1794-1835), Attributed
"Young Peasant Boy". Pencil and conte drawing is attributed to Swiss artist Leopold Robert. The child in this drawing wears a straw hat and carries a bird's nest in his hands. This drawing is dated ca. 1820. Image measures apprx 13" H x 10" W. With mat and contemporary frame this piece measures apprx 22" H x 17-1/2" W. No signature was found on the front of the drawing.

"Antilope Rupicapra Pall" and "Viverra Zenik" hand-colored woodcuts. Antelope woodcut is numbered CCLXXIX in upper right corner and Viverra woodcut is numbered CXVII in upper right corner. Images measure apprx 10" H x 7-1/2" W. With frame and French mat these woodcuts measure apprx 14" H x 12" W.

"Le Secretaire" and "Le Courly Lachete de L'Isle de Lucon". This pair of hand-colored woodcuts depicts a pair of unusual birds. Upper right corner of Le Courly is marked Page. 85. Upper left corner is marked Pl. 48. Lower right corner is marked C. Baguoy, Sculp. Lower left corner is marked P. Sonnerat Pinx. Le Secretaire is marked with the same names in lower right and left corners, however is marked Page 87 in upper right corner and Pl. 50 in upper left corner. Plate size is apprx 9" H x 7" W. Size with French mats and frame is apprx 14" H x 12" W.

121. 19th Century Spy Prints
Lot of three men's fashion plates from Vanity Fair magazine. Plate size for each piece is apprx 13" H x 8" W. With frame and mat each piece measures apprx 21" H x 15" W. The majority of these prints were colored by chromo-lithography. This collection includes "Sovereigns, No. 9" dating from May 4, 1872, "International Penny Postage" dating from September 17, 1887 and "Statesmen, No. 16" dating from May 22, 1869. Each print has additional information enclosed on the verso. Tag from Herrod's states that each print is an antique, over 100 years old at the time of purchase.

122. Trio of "Costume Parisien" Woodcut Prints
"Costume Parisien". Trio of hand-colored woodcuts from a French fashion magazine. First woodcut depicts a young woman in a white dress, numbered 92. Second woodcut depicts a young man in white breeches and a blue waistcoat, numbered 473. The third woodcut depicts a man in green trousers and a top hat and is numbered 494. Plate size for each print is apprx 7" H x 4-1/2" W. Two prints have french mats while the third has a simple green mat. Overall size of these prints is apprx 12" H x 8-1/2" W.

He lived in Atlantic City, New Jersey and illustrated for "The Quarterly Illustrator". Essig was a pupil of Edward Moran, James Hamilton and Pafa, his specialty being marine subjects.

129. Frank Thayer Merrill (American, 1848-?)
"Dam the Stoks". Ink illustration on paperboard, signed lower right corner "Frank T. Merrill". Hinged into mat but not framed. Paper size 22-1/2" x 14-1/2". A whimsical image of a young man confined to the town stocks in a glade near a tree. He gazes sadly up to Heaven as he smokes his pipe to pass the time. His hat is off, but he holds an umbrella to shade himself from the sun. Scratched on the wood of the stocks is the misspelled title line with a backwards "S" at the end. There are printers directions under the image and the denotation "My Novel Vol I p. 228". Also the quote "He no more remembered that he was....the parish stocks" and "Deliver proof.....Octo 7 1896".
