Spine also stamped with gilt. Undated, c. late 19th century. More than 50 exquisite, full-page and double-page plates, both black and white and some color, of European life in the 19th century by various artists. Written in German. Each volume measures apprx 16-1/2" H x 12-1/2" W. Burgundy color is slightly faded.

Volume I has apprx 384 pp. with black and white photograph illustrations. Volume II has pages 385-776 plus an eleven page index. Each volume measures apprx 16" H x 11-1/2" W.

This map from Monmouthshire is joined by eight pages from a book about the geography of Moonmouthshire, pp. 105-120. Also included in this group of works on paper is a title page from Thomas Earl of Coventr, Baron of Alesborough in Worcestershire. This page measures apprx 8" H x 5" W. Book pages measure apprx 17" H x 11" W. Map measures apprx 20-1/2" H x 17" W.

This grouping includes a stipple engraving of a man dated 1773. Measures apprx 11" H x 7" W, a hand-colored etching depicting a couple taking a walk, measuring apprx 15" H x 10" W. Also included is a watercolor drawing of a young couple in love, possibly the finished product from the hand-colored etching. This piece measures apprx 20-1/2" H x 16" W. Other items in this grouping are an etching of a gentleman by Lauffman, measuring apprx 15" H x 10-1/2" W, engraving entitled "Deux Fumeurs" dating from early 1800's. Measures apprx 13-1/2" H x 18" W. Other pieces include an engraving by William Elliot after a drawing by Gainsborough. Measures apprx 14-1/2" H x 19-1/2" W, a page from the Illustrated London News, dated February 16, 1856. Measures apprx 16" H x 11" W. The last item in this group is an architectural engraving of the Collegium de Coneville, measuring apprx 15" H x 20" W.

One of 500 copies, volumes 3 and 4 hardcover set in original two-toned cloth, leather labels on spines and publisher divided slipcase. A splendid catalogue which includes detailed bibliographical descriptions for each of the 149 manuscripts, having been purchased by Mellon from Denis Duveen in 1952. Its companion, containing the first two volumes devoted to the Mellon collection, was published in 1968.
