180. Middle-Eastern Architectural (20th Century)
A Middle-Eastern Villa. Watercolor on paper, signed in pencil indistinctly lower right and inscribed with the numerals 19. This sunny landscape has a careful study of a specific cluster of buildings nestled into a hilly terrain. There is a large palm tree at the right of the composition, and a small cactus at the lower left corner. This painting is archivally matted and framed, 10" x 13" image size, 16" x 19-1/4" with frame.

An Old City Street Scene. Watercolor on paper, not signed, archivally matted and framed, 12-1/2" x 9-1/2"; with frame 19" x 16". An "Orientalist" image from an undetermined Middle-Eastern country. A man is carving a block of stone in the foreground, in front of another man with a donkey. Two women who are draped head to ankle in traditional garb walk away toward an arched passage. Great attention has been paid to detail of the architecture as well as the sunlight and shadow characteristic of the locale.

A Scene in the Orientalist Manner. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right and dated 1914. Matted and framed under glass, 12" x 8"; with frame 18" x 14". This travelog piece shows some anonymous people and a horse in a brightly sunlit Middle-Eastern Street. Great attention has been paid to the perspective of the composition and the detail of the architecture, obviously from first-hand observation.

187. Harold Altman (American, 1924-2003)
"Figures and Awnings II". Aquatint on paper, signed in pencil lower right, titled lower center margin and "Edition 65" lower left. Altman, who was born in New York in 1924, is best known for his etchings and lithographs. His subjects are figures in landscapes, focusing on soft and serene scenes connecting people to nature. This early and rare etching is rather dark, depicting four figures walking away from awnings. This piece is similar to the "Let There be Light" etching from "The Magpie". Image itself measures apprx 23" x 18-1/4", overall with glass and frame apprx 36" x 29-1/2".

188. John Sokol (American, b. 1947)
"Dante as the Inferno", silkscreen on paper, numbered 3 of 50. Signed and dated 1980. Paper apprx 30" x 22", overall with frame apprx 33" x 25-1/4".
Born in Canton, Ohio, Sokol's work is in the permanent collections of the Akron Art Museum and the Canton Art Museum. He received his Masters Degree from Kent State University (1973) in Painting and Sculpture. John then began writing and publishing short stories and poetry, such as "Kissing the Bees" (Redgreene Press, Pittsburgh, PA, 1999), "A Thousand Years from Nowhere" (Pudding House Publications, Johnstown, OH, 2002) and "In the Summer of Cancer" (Endymion Press, Los Angeles, 2003).

This pair of hand-colored prints includes one colored etching by French artist Jean Hugard, ca. 1923. Second print is a colored mezzotint, painted by W.R. Bigg and engraved by John Jones. Etching is entitled "Interior with Three Women". This etching depicts a candle-lit interior with three women performing various domestic tasks. Signed "Hugard" in lower right. Measures apprx 27" H x 30" W. Mezzotint is entitled "Black Monday, or the Departure for School." This piece features a family preparing their youngsters to leave for school. With frame, this piece measures apprx 25" H x 30" W.

192. Unknown Artist (British, Late 19th/Early 20th Century)
Pair of Still Lifes with Fowl. Unsigned watercolors on paper, taped to wood panels, apprx 8" x 12" each, apprx 13" x 17" with frames. Each rustic still life sports recently killed quarry; one of four ducks and one of two pheasants in browns and rusty colors with white gouache highlighting. The pheasant painting also has a ink stamped inscription on the back of the frame indicating that it was framed as such in 1955, probably not the original framing.
