141. Picus Pubescens, Downy Woodpecker by Genevieve Estelle Jones, ca. 1870's Printed for "Illustrations of the nests and eggs of birds of Ohio", an un-bound copy. This is the first offering from a collection purchased directly from the family in 1978, which includes drawings and notes related to the prior publication of this extraordinary achievement. Illustrations of the nests and eggs of birds of Ohio were published in the small town of Circleville, Ohio, over a period of eight years from 1879 to 1886. The lithographic stone of the nest of the Downy Woodpecker currently resides in the Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio. Of the proposed 100 copies produced, fewer than half have been located in libraries and private hands. This plate was later numbered LVI, as in this upcoming collection, another such plate shows a hand-written note with change to the plate number by Dr. Jones, prior to publication. Image size 8" x 13-1/2"; with frame 14" x 19-3/4". This forest glade painting shows a great deal of observation and detailed rendering of the scene. Water rushes over rocks in a lively stream with very tall old trees shading the area from the sunlight shown in the distance.
