369. Flamboyant Gothic Chair, French, ca. 15th century


This chair certainly makes a statement with its size and ornate appearance. It measures apprx 79-1/2"H x 18-1/2"D x 29-1/2"W. The back is French, ca. 15th century and ornately carved with a gothic pattern and the top of the chair has carved lattice work flanked by two lions. The seat, later in date, is flanked by two arms which are supported by carved columns and opens to reveal a storage area. A small brass escutcheon is just below the seat and is decorated with 3 symbols; the bottom portion of what could be a spade or shield, a heart and a key hole. These openings are backed with faded red felt. Provenance: purchased from estate of Charles Roseman of Cleveland. Mr. Roseman, the president of Standard Drug, had a large collection of gothic furniture.

Lovely fireplace screen is a ca. 16th Century tapestry in a ca. 17th Century carved frame. The tapestry depicts a biblical scene of Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus chapter 17.7 - Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink). The people are dressed in clothing of the period. This scene has a border across the top with an orb in the center with various fruit on either side. At the bottom is a central cartouche flanked by various figures. The slender frame is carved with flowing vines and stands on turned feet. The screen measures apprx 50-1/4"H x 35-1/4"W. Provenance: The current owner purchased the firescreen in the 1950's from the Pirtle estate on Corning Drive in Bratenahl. It was in the living room, which is panelled in restoration style panelling with "Gringling Gibbons" style carvings around the over mantle.

Sofa has dark green upholstery with light green trim at edges and two dark green neck roll pillows. The frame is beautifully carved throughout and has curved arms and top with a central headrest panel with carving across the top. The apron is also carved and is supported by legs ending on claw feet on brass castors. Measures apprx 40"H x 90"L x 24"D. Provenance: Purchased from the Tallman family in the late 19th century, then by the current, third owner. The Tallmans moved to Janeville, WI from New York after making a large fortune in land speculation. They built an extravagant house in Janesville in 1855-57. President Lincoln stayed at the house in 1859. The house sat empty for many years and is now the Linclon-Tallman Museum.

A fabulous pair of French arm chairs with carving throughout, including a central pair of flowers at the top of the back rest and on the base of the chair. Single flowers are carved on both front legs as well. Original tapestry upholstery depicts a man playing a musical instrument with a dog at his feet on the back and various designs including a pair of birds, possibly peacocks on the seat of one chair. The other chair depicts a woman who appears to be sewing with a cat or perhaps a small dog on the back of the other and similar designs, including a pair of small dogs on the seat. The upholstery is secured by brass tacks and horse hair is probably under the arms and the backs of the chairs.

Two arm charirs with settee of beautifully carved gilt wood frame with very nice needlepoint upholstery and pettipoint flowers in a dark rose field. Settee measures apprx 38-1/2"h x 21"d x 69"l. Chairs measure apprx 38"H x 23-1/2"D x 24"W.

Eight chairs including six side chairs and two arm chairs from a prominent Cleveland estate. All have inlay band work in brass. Pierced back rails are carved and have brass inlay flower form. Cushioned seat with brass edging leading to fluted sabre legs. Cuban mahogany has been prized as a fine funiture wood for hundreds of years and is in limited supply today. Apprx 32"T.

This sideboard measures apprx 43-1/2"H x 23-1/2"D x 72"L. It has three sections, a large central section flanked by two smaller sections, all separated by reeded columns ending on carved padded bun feet. The central section consists of a cabinet with two doors that open to reveal a space for one or two shelves under a drawer with two brass handles with conforming bail handles. The brass back plates are decorated with what appears to be a beehive surrounded by flowers. The two side sections have smaller drawers, also with similar brass handles and single door cabinets. Each section has a small brass escutcheon on the door.

This octagonal vitrine has two glass shelves and lovely wood carving throughout. It stands on four long slender legs with carving at the top and padded feet. There is a stretcher with curved supports and a central carved medallion. Pin locking mechanism at top and hinged panel door access. In two sections, apprx 63"T x 26-1/2"D overall.

French side table has a rose marble top with yellow highlights and tan veins throughout. The wood base has four reeded columns ending on slightly curved legs. The wood features brass inlay throughout and brass gallery around the perimeter. Dove-tailed drawer can be locked and comes with a small brass key. Measures apprx 30" H x 20" W x 14" in diameter.
