619. From the Collection of Mr. Gellei, Haifa, Israel
An Eagle Kazak, ca. Late 19th Century

It was when Mr. Gellei turned 90 a couple of years ago, that he decided to give his antiques and rug collections to his family who now reside in the United States. As the chief pathologist at the famed Rambam Hospital in Haifa, Israel, Mr. Gellei had frequent opportunities to travel around the world and while doing so, purchased numerous works of art, antique furniture, textiles and rugs. For more than 40 years, Mr. Gellei built a vast collection of oil paintings, European antiques and antique rugs. The majority of his antique rug collection was given to his grandson’s family, now living in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Since the family could only use a small number of his rugs, they have decided to offer the rest of the collection with the hope that other rug enthusiasts will now be able to appreciate and cherish these wonderful works of art. We hope you will enjoy examining the following rugs in this special category as much we did when we first saw them at the family’s residence.
Antique Eagle Kazak is dated ca. late 19th Century and measures apprx 4'9" x 8'9". This rug has a rusty red field with a geometric star and flower ribbon border. Three abstract floral medallions are located within the field. This rug features three borders and cream fringe at both ends. Colors include rusty red, olive green, cream, navy blue and camel.
