| 15. Nicolaes Maes (Dutch, 1632-1693), Attributed
Portrait of a Fine Gentleman. Oil on canvas, attributed to the Dutch genre and portrait painter Nicolaes Maes. Framed in a 3-1/2" wide gold leafed formal portrait frame, though not of the period, 27-1/4" high x 22-1/4" wide, canvas size. This regally poised composition is a vigorously painted likeness of a patrician gentleman in a 3/4 view. He is seated in a traditional portrait format with foliage and a distant lake with a castle on an island. Strongly rendered clouds billow in the sunset sky. The image is crisp and full with a very direct stare that connects the subject to the viewer at a glance and conveys the strong personality of the sitter. Provenance: Purchased from the collection of Bernard Vixseboxse, 1975. Includes binder with B/W photo and artist bibliography and bill of sale. 15,000/20,000 back to catalog |
