| 129. Frank Thayer Merrill (American, 1848-?)
"Dam the Stoks". Ink illustration on paperboard, signed lower right corner "Frank T. Merrill". Hinged into mat but not framed. Paper size 22-1/2" x 14-1/2". A whimsical image of a young man confined to the town stocks in a glade near a tree. He gazes sadly up to Heaven as he smokes his pipe to pass the time. His hat is off, but he holds an umbrella to shade himself from the sun. Scratched on the wood of the stocks is the misspelled title line with a backwards "S" at the end. There are printers directions under the image and the denotation "My Novel Vol I p. 228". Also the quote "He no more remembered that he was....the parish stocks" and "Deliver proof.....Octo 7 1896". 200/400 Sold $126.50 back to catalog |
