| 400. A Carved Wax Portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent, ca. late 18th/Early 19th Century
The Admiral (1735-1823) is portrayed in profile, in a shadow box frame of maple. Backed with the original green velvet lining. Wax is adhered to black, reverse painted glass. carving apprx 2-3/4" x 2", overall in frame apprx 7-3/4" x 6-1/2". Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean during 1795, he blocked the French fleet at Toulon. He also defeated the Spanish off Cape St Vincent in 1797. As First Lord of the Admiralty, (1801-4), his ruthless reforms reduced corruption in the administration of the navy. 400/600 Sold $529.00 back to catalog |
